How is a PU cast floor applied?

Applying a PU cast floor is a skilled craft that requires precision, technique, and the right materials. The floor is built up in layers, with each layer serving its own specific function. At Romar-Voss Floor Systems, we offer products for every step, ensuring you get a sleek, hard-wearing, and durable result. In this text, we explain the complete process, from preparation to finishing.

What happens before the floor is poured?

Good preparation is important. First, we inspect the subfloor, which must be clean, dry, and stable. If there are any cracks or uneven spots, we fix them. We also thoroughly remove any dust or grease to prevent adhesion issues.

Sometimes the subfloor needs to be sanded or scraped with special machines. After that, we apply a primer. This ensures that the cast floor adheres properly; without it, the floor won't stick.

The scratch coat: creating a flat surface

After the primer the scratch coat is applied, which provides an even base. It fills in imperfections and minor holes, creating a smooth surface.

The scratch coat is thin but very important. It ensures that the next layer is distributed beautifully and evenly. Using a scratch coat guarantees quality and durability.

The cast layer: the core of the floor

The PU cast layer is the heart of the floor. This layer determines the colour, appearance, and feel. The mixture consists of two components, which we mix precisely on-site.

The floor is spread evenly with a trowel, a manual process requiring great care. The layer is usually 2 to 3 millimeters thick. We make sure no air bubbles form and that the floor is completely flat.

During the curing process, a sleek, seamless finish is created. This typically takes 24 to 48 hours, during which the floor should not be walked on.

Finishing with a strong topcoat

Once the cast layer is hard, we apply a topcoat. This protects the floor against dirt, scratches, and wear. The topcoat also determines the level of shine: matte, satin, or glossy.

The topcoat makes the floor extra durable, keeping it looking great for longer and making it easier to clean. The finish is tailored to your space and usage.

How long does it take?

Applying a PU cast floor usually takes four to five days. Each layer must cure properly before the next one is applied. You should count on approximately one day per layer (including drying time).

Planning and preparation are therefore important. We align the process with your schedule to minimize disruption.

What can you do yourself?

Before we start, you can move your belongings. Ensure the room is empty. Remove furniture, carpets, or baseboards. It's also helpful to ventilate the room well.

After installation, it's best to leave the floor undisturbed for 48 hours. After that, it is walkable. It will be fully load-bearing after about a week.
